With summer’s end comes a sting-y pest… the yellow jacket. It may seem odd to mention bees as the summer is coming to a close but a large percentage of bee stings occur towards the end of summer and beginning of autumn. During late summer a nest could contain thousands of yellow jackets. Homeowners should be careful when raking piles of leaves and woodpiles – they make lovely nests!
The best way to avoid a yellow jacket frenzy is avoid swatting them. The action of swatting alerts others nearby to attack. Yellow jackets usually do not sting unless their nests are provoked, so if one happens to land on you try to stay calm and slowly brush them off with a piece of paper.
Try to prevent children from running around barefoot in the yard. Many nests are burrowed under ground which can be a nasty surprise for tiny feet.
Keep your garbage lids on tight. Yellow jackets are attracted to sweet smells – strong perfume and juicy ripe fruit are especially attractive to them. They are active during the day so if you can do the bulk of your yard work late afternoon or in the early evening that would be ideal.
There are two tasks every person needs to complete come summers end – over seeding & fertilization.
These two go hand in hand. We are coming out of a very dry and damaging season for grass. For those who have lost their grass due to excessive dryness, lack of moisture of heat stress, there is some good news – you can get your green full lawn back in autumn if you take some necessary steps.
September is all about fertilization. Giving your lawn a strong fertilizer is like giving it vitamins to prepare it for challenges ahead, especially going into the cooler months. When fertilizing always be sure to spread the mixture evenly and plentiful on your lawn regardless of whether you have healthy, damaged or dead grass.
After fertilizing comes the fun part…seeding! It is important that seeds too are spread evenly in all areas of your lawn. The bare spots in your lawn should be raked and hand spread lightly. After spreading rake the seeds in gently. The grass will grow at a slower rate but be patient and you will reap the rewards.
